Often bullied and taken advantage of by her dominant twin sister Katie, Emily began Series 3 as a closeted lesbian, eventually coming out to her friends and loved ones, including Naomi, whom she is in love with. As the series progressed, Emily came out of Katie's shadow and began a relationship with Naomi.

Always game for a laugh. Chris Miles doesn’t need a family, or a home - so long as he’s got something to smoke, screw, pop, puff and snort he’ll be fine. His crush on psychology teacher Angie leads to a relationship, but when he becomes interested in Jal, she becomes pregnant with his baby. Chris died from a blood clot in his brain at the end of Series 2.

A beautiful idealist, Naomi Campbell is passionate, political and principled - no one believes in anything anymore - except for her that is. Adamant that she wasn't gay, Naomi slept with and then began a relationship with Emily, falling in love with her and eventually learning to accept her sexuality.

Openly gay, Maxxie loves to dance and hopes to pursue a dancing career. He is best friends with Anwar, but the pair frequently clash due to Maxxie's homosexuality and Anwar's Muslim faith. When he is stalked by a girl named Sketch in Series 2, she eventually gives up and dates Anwar instead, attempting to turn him into a clone of Maxxie.

Both devilishly evil and angelishly kind, Cassie Ainsworth was admitted a rehab clinic in Series 1 after suffering from an eating disorder. She harbors a deep affection for Sid and eventually they get together, but she flees to New York and gets a job as a waitress after she witnesses Chris's death.
#6: Effy

The show's longest-serving character, Effy Stonem first appeared as Tony's silent younger sister back in Series 1. As the show's enigmatic queen bee in Series 3, Effy spent the series caught in a love triangle between Freddie and Cook, with both boys in love with her. Quiet and distant, Effy often tries not to express any emotions even in the midst of her parents' turbulent divorce.

Desperate to lose his virginity, Sid Jenkins's love for best mate Tony's girlfriend Michelle makes him oblivious to Cassie's affection for him. When he eventually learns of Cassie's feelings, the pair begin a long-distance relationship after Cassie moves to Scotland. When Cassie runs away to New York, Tony and Michelle buy a plane ticket so Sid can follow.

Impulsive and oozing charisma, James Cook loves to have a good time. However, when his dark side emerges there’s no act, no matter how selfish or destructive, that Cook won’t consider. A good friend of Freddie and JJ, Cook's relationship with Effy gets between them and in the final episode of Series 3 he admits to Effy that he has fallen in love with her, but she chooses Freddie.

The best-looking, clever, most popular boy in town, born leader Tony Stonem's manipulative ways saw cheat on girlfriend Michelle with Abigail and Maxxie. After being hit by a bus and ending up in intensive care for six months, sociopath Tony has to slowly regain his memories and abilities.

Master illusionist Jonah Jeremiah "JJ" Jones is best friends with Freddie and Cook, dreaming up many of the trio's entertaining schemes. Suffering from Asperger's syndrome, JJ is extremely good at maths, but lacks basic social skills. Having formed a close friendship with Emily, he lost his virginity to her as a "one-time" offer simply as they're friends, even though she is a lesbian.
