Why do you think Skins U.S remake’s debut was so controversial?

I always felt Skins was a quite distinctly British show, and I think that was why it did really well to begin with. All we had on TV before Skins for teenage shows was just like American imports and it was important to have something British and it was very much about the British experience.

- HANNAH MURRAY (CASSIE, 1st Generation)

There’s a whole lot of age restrictions.  I don’t like generalizing, because it’s a big old place, America. There’s that many more people living there. But I would say that it probably says more about an audience or an American audience as opposed to Skins as an idea, or a project. It’s understandable, you know? If you associate 20, 18, 19 still as kids, not old enough to drink, then you’re going to be surprised when you see them on TV with American accents doing exactly that. I don’t agree with the naïveté, it’s not like it doesn’t exist. You can’t tell me everyone in America doesn’t touch alcohol until the age of 21. You guys are getting crunk. Everybody’s getting totally crunk right now.

- JACK O’CONNELL (COOK, 2nd Generation)

I suppose it depends on where you are in America, but it’s certainly a more conservative society, which is why a program like Skins would cause controversy. There were a lot of parents that weren’t too keen on our show here [UK], but we don’t get up in arms as much as people do sometimes in America. The fact that the legal drinking age is 21 leads to a kind of—I suppose it’s the reason why they do it, it leads to a slightly longer innocence. Everything that goes on here [UK], goes on in America, it’s just a lot harder to get it shown on television without compromising some kind of integrity along the way. Culturally, America’s really a place that’s fascinated me—you  can watch Terminator Salvation on television at 6 o’clock in the evening and there’s people blowing each other up with guns. I feel like America has the best and worst of everything.

- JOE DEMPSIE (CHRIS, 1st Generation)

I know a little bit about it and I’ve read about it, I haven’t seen it. I’m not avoiding it, I didn’t actually end up watching quite a lot of the episodes in our series either, and to go back and relive it in America today—it’s a bit too soon. I read some of the reactions of the press in the States, which is maybe something more drastic than the reactions we have here. It’s a tricky one, particularly having not seen the American version.  I’m sure it’s quite similar to our version. I think in America people maybe get more involved in things whereas in England if you don’t like it, you don’t watch it. You don’t necessarily have to have such a large reaction to it—but I don’t know, it’s difficult to say exactly why the reaction was more severe for the Americans. It’s probably because advertising networks pay a lot more on MTV than advertisers over here. I’m sure it’s many different things.

Skins is back for its fifth series and to celebrate TNS is giving away five complete Skins DVD boxsets - that's series 1-5 (including the one airing now).

The former Skins star told DS that while the film may not be appropriate for Smith's younger fans, others will be drawn to his performance.

Murray said: "I guess a lot of fans of Doctor Who who are children maybe shouldn't be watching a weird, vaguely incestuous cloning drama.

"But I think that if you're a fan of Matt... he's really great in Womb so hopefully people will enjoy it for that. I think it's a really interesting film that raises a lot of questions and makes people think."

When he was 17, he was cast as Tony Stonem in the TV drama Skins. His recent films include Clash Of The Titans and A Single Man, which is now out on DVD. He lives with his parents in Wokingham."

"The dark side of the internet is coming to the big screen with an array of future film stars. A suicidal teen logs on to a web chatroom and the initial, innocent chatter about Harry Potter and potty pop stars gives way to the story's narrator, Jim, being lured into a nasty, spiteful power game controlled by other adolescents he can't see.

The film started life as a play by Enda Walsh and it was presented at the National Theatre.

Now the playwright, who also wrote Steve McQueen's searing movie Hunger, has adapted it for the cinema.

The film starts shooting soon and the film's producers, Ruby Films and Film 4, came up with a clever way of getting away from the usual, dull teen movie fare by hiring Hideo Nakata, director of the Japanese Ring horror pictures, to make Chatroom.

Nakata noted in an interview online recently: 'It deals with a very dark reality, especially how young people's negative feelings of anxiety, hatred and anger can become amplified.' He noted that a depressed boy can become even more depressed through certain kinds of internet communication.

Anyway, the cast he has assembled for Chatroom is anything but depressing. In fact, there are some exciting, fast-rising names on his list.

The actors who have been signed up include Aaron Johnson, who is working with Sam Taylor Wood on Nowhere Boy and on Matthew Vaughn's Kick Ass; and Matthew Beard, the clever, understated actor who was in When Did You Last See Your Father? and who gives a small, gem of a performance in An Education.

I'm looking forward to seeing how Hannah Murray moves from the small screen, where she played the delicate Cassie in Skins, to a larger playground in Chatroom. Likewise for fellow Skins alumni Daniel Kaluuya.

Imogen Poots, who was in 28 Days Later and the forthcoming Me And Orson Welles (it features Zac Efron and Christian McKay as Welles) will also be in the film, which will officially be announced at the Cannes Film Festival in two weeks.

British movies have many parents and Chatroom is no exception. Besides executives from Ruby Films and Film 4 there was a lot of development help from the UK Film Council, and the New Cinema Fund, from the Lottery, provided £700,000 towards the budget.

When the play was staged at the National, actors sat on a bare stage and didn't interact. Of course they wouldn't, because they're online!

However, Walsh has opened up his play so people meet other people. Otherwise two hours of scenes moving from one bloke looking at a screen to another bloke looking at a screen would be pretty dull.

However, there's a lot of excitement surrounding Walsh's screenplay, which is why the producers were able to nab such a good cast."

"Since his breakout turn at the age of twelve in 2002’s About a Boy, Nicholas Hoult has worked alongside such actors as Nicolas Cage, Kenneth Branagh, and Gabriel Byrne, as well as starring in Channel 4’s smash series Skins, and is fast-becoming one of Britain’s most in-demand young actors. As part of the BFI’s Future Film Festival in partnership with BBC Blast, the star of A Single Man discusses his experiences of breaking into the film industry with Rajini Vaidyanathan, offering tips and insights for those looking to do the same."
