Kaya as Cathy in Wuthering Heights

Skins star Kaya Scoledario has been cast as Cathy in a new version of Wuthering Heights. The film is to be Andrea Arnold's follow-up to the critically acclaimed Fish Tank, and the likes of Natalie Portman and Gemma Arterton had previously been linked with the lead role in Emily Brontë's tale of doomed love.

Scoledario announced on Twitter: "I'm gonna be in the new Wuthering Heights film! as Cathy! should probs read the book... start filming next month, can't wait!"

It will be the first leading role for the star, 18, who has had supporting roles in the Sam Rockwell-starring Moon, Britflick Shank and Clash of the Titans - the latter currently topping the US box office.

Scoledario is set to follow in the footsteps of fellow Skins alumni Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire) and Nicholas Hoult (A Single Man) onto the big screen.

The casting suggests Arnold is going for younger actors, more in line with Bronte's text than actors who have been used in previous adaptations.

Currently, the role of the moody Heathcliff is yet to be cast, though a casting call has been sent out for a 16-24-year-old who is “genuine Romany Gyspy/South Asian/Mediterranean/Indian/mixed race” in appearance.

The Times reports that the filmmakers have entered into discussions with members of Yorkshire's Romany community to find a match for Bronte's description of the character.

In the text Heathcliff is described as being "dark-skinned gypsy in aspect".

"We're certainly after somebody who best fits that Brontë description in the book," said Gail Stevens, the film's casting director, who also worked on Slumdog Millionaire.

Filming is due to begin in the summer.
