"In maintaining what is quickly becoming a great Dean Close tradition, a record five pupils have been offered a place in the National Youth Theatre this year.
The National Youth Theatre is a byword for innovation and excellence in the dramatic world, and we are delighted that so many of our talented pupils have been awarded places at this year's training centres.
Thousands of people audition for places on these prestigious courses and these five pupils are building on the success of our previous and current members of NYT (currently two Upper Sixth formers are also members). It is an outstanding achievement for any School to secure one place per year. All five are extremely gifted young people who worked exceptionally hard to ensure that their audition speeches were to a very high standard. They have all taken major roles in school productions and collectively have represented the school to trophy-winning standards at the Cheltenham Festival of Performing Arts.
William Merrick (17) whose roles include Polonius (Hamlet), Grumio (The Taming of the Shrew), Venticello (Amadeus), Inspector (An Inspector Calls) and Posner in 'The History Boys', a role he will be reprising at this years Edinburgh Fringe Festival. In 2009, William was one of the top ten of over 50, 000 candidates nationally in his GCSE examination."
